The conductor, founder and principal responsible for the Coral Gregoriano de Belo Horizonte and the Gregorian Chant Course is Nereu de Castro Teixeira, born in Oliveira, state of Minas Gerais.
Priest Nereu's first contact with the Gregorian chant was at the Seminário São José, in Rio de Janeiro. Later, he obtained the Certificates of Superior Studies of Gregorian Chant, Gregorian and Polyphonic Regencies and Ward Method, granted by the Superior Institute of Gregorian Chant, in Paris, where he studied from 1959 to 1961.
Priest Nereu is graduated in Journalism and he occuped several director positions in the Catholic Church of Brazil and Latin America media communications and accompanied the two trips of the Pope John Paul II throughout Brazil as representative of the Bishops of Brazil Conference - CNBB. He is licensed in Philosophy and has a master degree in Theology granted by the Pontifical Gregorian University.
Priest Nereu is very known in Belo Horizonte and in the State of Minas Gerais for his great performance in the activities of the Archdiocese and in the musical area. Besides, he was the first priest to have a Brazilian television program. In the 60's, for three years, he had a weekly program in the old TV Itacolomi where, dressed in a cassock, he played a lot of success with his guitar and sang musics in Portuguese, English, French and Italian. He is also a writer, having published several books.
