GREGORIAN CHANT IN BELO HORIZONTE
Besides the Gregorian Choral
of Belo Horizonte there are two other groups which promote the Gregorian chant
in the city. One is formed by Franciscan ex-seminarists from Santos Dumont -
which 6 of them are also participants of the choral - and other seminars
(Caraça, Diamantina and Mariana). They sung each last Sunday of every month, in
the 9:30 h mass at the Saint Francis` Wounds Church, in the neighborhood Carlos
Prates, but at this moment the group does not sing. The participation was open
to all the ones, who are interested in gregorian music.
The other is formed by the
Benedictines nuns of Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy (Mosteiro Nossa Senhora das
Graças), in Vila Paris.
For 15 years the group of
franciscan ex-seminarists, met themselves every Thursday, from 7 to 11 p.m., at
the Masseo`s Bar, located in Avenida Getúlio Vargas, 1.179, Savassi, to drink a
little beer and have a good chat. They take advantage of the opportunity to
sing gregorian musics and the music of the time they were at the seminar, as
Gaudeamus igitur, Io vivat and others.
Probably, this bar is the
only one in the world, where someone can hear and sing gregorian songs.
